Non-verbal reasoning (NVR) is an 11 plus subject which is not typically covered within the school curriculum. Therefore, children may find this topic challenging to begin with. The key here is to ensure your child practices regularly, learning the correct methods of how to approach each question.

NVR questions are designed to test a child's spatial awareness and ability to solve problems using logical reasoning. A typical non-verbal reasoning question will involve the manipulation of shapes or images whereby your child will be asked to identify rotations, mirror images, complete sequences and much more.

As different education authorities have the power to determine which disciplines and individual topics are included in their 11+ entrance exam, the tests may vary across the country. However, examples of 11 plus non-verbal reasoning questions might include:

Hidden Shapes Adding/Subtracting Shapes Analogies
Series type 1 and 2 3 x 3 Grids Reversing colours and silhouettes

NVR questions can cover a wide ranging variety of different styles that can be displayed in many different ways to test the mental dexterity of a child's thinking. Educare11plus always recommend that parents consult their local consortium of grammar schools or contact their preferred school directly for information regarding what is covered in your area.

As the entry standard of grammar schools remains consistently high across the country, it is important that your child not only has a good knowledge of the core topic areas, but excellent speed and accuracy skills too.

From our experience, some children have the ability to visualise non-verbal reasoning questions very quickly, whereas others may find it more difficult. However, this should not deter anyone! The more familiar your child is with NVR questions, the quicker they will be able to tackle them. To help develop strong NVR skills mock tests help to produce the best 11+ preparation for your child.
